Humphreys Wins ITA Regional Championship

Freshman Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) became the second Warhawk women's tennis player to win the USTA/ITA Women's Midwest Regional Singles Championship hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota Sunday. 

Humphreys defeated Anne Lombardi of Carleton in a semifinal 6-2, 6-3 to ensure an all-Whitewater final. The other semifinal pinned teammates (and doubles partners) Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) against Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North). Bayliss came out on top of the three set match winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to face another teammate in the championship.

Humphreys won 6-3, 6-1 to win the title earning automatic All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and a trip to the Small College Championships in Fort Meyers, Florida October 10-13. She is the second singles player from UW-W to win the regional title. Kalla Schaefer won in 2009 and 2011. Bayliss teamed with Schaefer in 2011 to win the regional championship on the doubles side. 

The Warhawks made a mark in the program archives with historical days Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the regional championship. UW-W had all five singles players advance into the round of sixteen Friday. Saturday's competition saw three Warhawks advance into semifinal positions and Sunday brought an all-Whitewater final. 

Saturday, September 21
After a historical Friday at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, the Warhawk women continued their success in singles competition Saturday. Three of the five UW-W players making it to the round of sixteen Friday have moved on to the semifinals putting three Warhawks in four semifinal positions. Gustavus Adolphus is hosting the event that will wrap up Sunday in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) moved into the round of 16 after back-to-back 6-0, 6-2 wins Friday night. Saturday she defeated Katie Gillman (UW-Eau Claire) 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 and then topped Shelby Henderson (St. Thomas) 7-5, 6-4 to move into the semifinals. 

Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) won 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0 in her two matches Friday. In the round of sixteen she beat Sidney Dirks (Gustavus Adolphus) 6-0, 6-1 and moved into a semifinal after defeating Abigail Pellett (Carroll) 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Bayliss will face teammate Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) in the semifinal in the top half of the singles bracket.

In the bottom half of the singles bracket, Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) posted two wins Friday to advance to the round of sixteen. She topped Lisa Hall (St. Olaf) 6-4, 6-1 in her first match Saturday and followed with a 7-5, 6-0 rout of Victoria Bravo (St. Kate's) to become a semifinalist.

After multiple matches in singles, the Warhawk duos struggled in doubles competition Saturday evening. The teams of Bayliss/Vitale and Hillary Franzen (Wausau/West)/Abby Day (Hartford/Hartford) lost in the round of sixteen. 

The regional championships will conclude Sunday. With three Warhawks advancing into semifinal positions, Whitewater is guaranteed at least one representative in the singles championship match Sunday. More information will be posted when available.

Friday, September 20
For the first time in school history all five Warhawk singles players in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships have advanced to the round of sixteen.  The event is hosted by Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minnesota and spans Friday to Sunday.
 
Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North), Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park), Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper), Erika Williams (Burnsville, MN/Lakeville South) and Amy Upthagrove (Muskego/Muskego) have all moved on to the round of 16 by winning two matches each on Friday.  Singles competition will resume on Saturday.
 
Bayliss and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) paired up in doubles to advance to the round of sixteen as well.  They are joined by their teammates Abby Day (Hartford/Hartford) and Hillary Franzen (Wausau/West).
 
The duo of Williams and Upthagrove lost in the round of 32 to the number four seed, and Jessica Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) and Humphreys are set to face the number one seed in the round of 32.  Double competition resumes on Saturday as well.

The winners of singles and doubles competition will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama in October.


Preview - Thursday, September 19
The UW-W women's tennis team heads to St. Peter, Minnesota this weekend to compete in the United States Tennis Association and Intercollegiate Tennis Association women's tennis Midwest Regional Championship.  Gustavus Adolphus is the host for the event and has a website dedicated to the results of the competition.  That website can be found by clicking here.

The Warhawks have grabbed three of the top eight seeds in singles competition.  Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) is the overall three seed while Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and Jackie Vitale (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) are the 5-8 "alphabetical" seeds.  Bayliss will pair with Vitale in doubles where they will compete as the overall number three seed.

The winners of singles and doubles competition will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships in Mobile, Alabama in October.
