The score is somewhat deceiving. Play, as always, began with doubles. UW-W's number two was down 7-4 at one point, but won five straight to pull it out. And flight three was going GAC's way with a 7-5 lead before Whitewater's pair came back. When singles play began, with Whitewater leading 3-0, Vitale's match at six went quickly, with Vitale leading 5-0 in the second set. Horton won three games in a row to make the second set 5-3 but Vitale rallied for the win. That provided a crucial point because at the time that Vitale's match was 5-3 in the second set, UW-W trailed in the two, three and five singles matches. When Vitale, and then Bayliss, won their singles matches there was no reason to continue play in the other matches.
The number one doubles match pitted two ranked duos, with Schaefer and Bayliss of Whitewater
ranked third in the Central Region and Gaard and Erickson ranked eleventh. With the win the Warhawk duo upped their record to 19-10. Divelbiss and Smith are 20-3, and Kasten and Aguilar moved to 13-2. Bayliss' singles win gives her a 22-3 mark, and Vitale improved to 16-2.
UW-W, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion and NCAA III national tournament qualifiers five consecutive years, is 16-4.
The Warhawks will host Carroll University at 9:30 and Elmhurst College at 3:30 Sunday, April 15. There is no spectator charge. The Wangerin Courts are located south of Williams Center on campus.
