Karls Honored for Academics
Alyse Karls, Academic All-District
Alyse Karls, senior setter for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, has been named Second Team Academic All-District.   The team is coordinated by the College Sports Information Directors of America and sponsored by ESPN The Magazine.  

Karls, an English major with a teaching English as a second language emphasis, has a 3.88 (out of 4.0) cumulative grade point average.  She has been a member of UW-W's Student Athletic Advisory Committee for three years.  She has also participated in "Reading with the Warhawks", serving as the program leader for the 2008-2009 school year.  She is member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Sigma Alpha Lambda.  

Karls is tenth in career assists in the UW-W record book with 1,233.  She is also tied for twelfth in service aces (145) and twentieth in digs (852).  She is averaging 10.6 assists and 2.7 digs per game this season.  She has helped UW-W stay among the top ten teams in the national Division III poll, posting a 29-6 record going in to the semi-finals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. 

The CoSIDA/ESPN team recognizes the combination of excellence in the classroom and participation in intercollegiate athletics.  Schools nominates player who meet minimum academic and competitive standards, and the players receiving the most votes on a national ballot are honored.  Members of each of six district first teams are placed on a national ballot for Academic All-America honors.

UW-Whitewater is in District Five, which includes Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota.  The CoSIDA College Division includes players at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II and III schools, as well as National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics schools.
