No. 8 Wrestling Downs UW-Eau Claire on Senior Night

The No. 8 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team finished the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual season unbeaten Wednesday night after defeating UW-Eau Claire 36-7 on Senior Night at Russell Arena.
 
The Warhawks (10-5 overall, 5-0 WIAC) took eight of the 10 weight classes after recognizing seniors Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) and Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) prior to their final home dual.
 
Fittingly, Newman and Quartullo each posted falls at 141 and 197 pounds, respectively. Newman, ranked No. 1 in the nation by both the National Wrestling Coaches Association and D3wrestle.com, pinned Ramsey Bloy of the Blugolds (10-6, 2-3) in 28 seconds.
 
Quartullo pinned Jordan Meyer, ranked No. 10 in the country by the NWCA, in 4:38.
 
Fresh off a runner-up finish over the weekend at the annual Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational, junior Nick Stencel (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) added six points to UW-Whitewater's total with a pin at 2:57 his bout against James Huntley at 184 pounds.
 
Sophomore Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg), ranked sixth by the NWCA and eighth by D3wrestle.com at 133 pounds, bested Casey Hedrington by technical fall, 18-0, at the 6:00 mark. After Quartullo's pin, sophomore Wilder Wichman (Watertown, Wis./Johnson Creek) scored a 12-4 major decision over David Dudych at 149 pounds.
 
Sophomore Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel), ranked No. 7 in the nation by the NWCA and No. 6 by D3wrestle.com, started the dual with an 8-3 decision over Abe Dickinson after scoring two first-period takedowns.
 
Other winners by decision included junior Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) at 174 pounds, and junior Jordan Festge (Madison, Wis./Madison East), who tallied an early takedown and held on for a 3-2 victory at 285.
 
The Warhawks visit UW-Eau Claire's Don Parker Open this Saturday at 10 a.m. in the team's final tournament before the WIAC Championship, which is slated for Feb. 9 in Whitewater.
