O’Donnell’s Big Day Leads Gymnastics to Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater gymnastics team posted the third-highest team score in program history and remained undefeated for the 2017 season Saturday with a 192.400-184.425 victory over UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual meet at the Williams Center.
 
Sophomore Lisa O'Donnell (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) set what is believed to be a National Collegiate Gymnastics Association national record with a 38.875 all-around score. O'Donnell won the vault, the uneven parallel bars and the floor exercise to lead the Warhawks (7-0 overall).
 
UW-Whitewater tied the No. 13 score in the program record book on the vault with a 47.850 as a team. O'Donnell scored a 9.700 to lead the team, and senior Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) and junior Chloe Rehberg (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) followed in second and third, respectively. Fiorilli totaled a 9.575, and Rehberg posted a 9.550. Junior Lewa Evans (Milwaukee, WI/Whitefish Bay) finished fifth with a 9.525, and senior Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) tied for sixth with a 9.500.
 
The Warhawks continued their strong performances on the bars with the team's No. 4 all time score, a 48.125. O'Donnell tied the third-best score in program history with a 9.825. Senior Mackenzie Smith (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) tied for second with a 9.700, and junior McKenzie Foster (Manitou Beach, MI/Addison) tallied a 9.600 to finish fourth. Junior Kate Mierow (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield Central) recorded a 9.550 to place fifth, and sophomore Bailey Fitzpatrick (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) was sixth with a 9.450.
 
UW-Whitewater set a school record on the balance beam with a 48.225. Foster (9.750), Smith (9.700), Pickett (9.675), O'Donnell (9.575) and sophomore Franchesca Hutton (Shakopee, Minn./Main Street School of Performing Arts) (9.525) swept the top five for the Warhawks. Foster's score is tied for the third-best in program history.
 
The Warhawks wrapped up the meet with their sixth-best team score in program history in the floor exercise (48.200). O'Donnell tied the program's No. 10 score with a 9.775, and Pickett placed second by tying the 14th-best result in school history with a 9.750. Hutton finished third with a 9.675, Mierow placed fourth with a 9.550 and Evans claimed sixth place with a 9.450.
 
As part of the meet, UW-Whitewater welcomed back its alumni and honored the fifth anniversary of the 2012 national championship team, the first NCGA title team in the program's history.  The Warhawks also wore pink in support of breast cancer awareness and raised funds to be donated for breast cancer research.
 
UW-Whitewater continues WIAC action Friday at UW-La Crosse. Meet time is slated for 6:30 p.m.
