The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team was competitive in several matches Saturday afternoon against the University of Wisconsin during a 38-3 loss in a dual featuring two of the state's top college wrestling programs at Kachel Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Wilder Wichman (Watertown, Wis./Johnson Creek) won a 7-2 decision at 149 pounds to lead the Warhawks (5-3 overall), who are ranked 12th in NCAA Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
The Badgers (4-0), ranked No. 19 in Division I by the NWCA, earned bonus points in five of the final six matches en route to their fourth straight victory in the all time series between the two teams.
Junior
Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) nearly tied the dual at 9-9 after a four-point nearfall on UW's Jared Scharenbrock, who converted an incredible reversal into a pin to give the Badgers a 15-3 advantage at the intermission.
Sophomore
Mike Tortorice (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) started the dual by pushing Ethan Rotondo into overtime with a riding time point at the end of regulation. Rotondo registered a takedown early in the sudden victory overtime to end the bout.
