The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team picked up wins in six of nine matches Tuesday night to secure a season-opening, 27-11 triumph over UW-Oshkosh in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual at Kachel Gymnasium.
Senior
Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) and sophomore
Hazen Rice (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) led the Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) with pins at their respective weight classes.
Newman, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation at 184 pounds, moved up to 197 on Tuesday night and pinned Jordan Lemcke of the Titans (0-1, 0-1) in 58 seconds.
Rice picked up a pair of near falls at 133 pounds en route to a pin at the 6:20 mark of his bout against Anthony Senthavisouk.
Junior
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) picked up five points with a technical fall at 174 pounds, defeating AJ Stengel 16-0 at the 6:43 mark. Senior
Austin Quartullo (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) earned a four-point major decision at 157 pounds with a 14-6 victory over Nate Arquinego.
Sophomore
Ryder Sigler (Fredonia, Wis./Cedarburg) collected a 10-3 decision at 165 over Hasam Alabed and, in his UW-Whitewater debut, freshman Dylan Uzumecki came through with a 3-0 decision over Tory Jandrin at 285 pounds.
The Warhawks return to action this Saturday at the Luther Open, which begins at 9 a.m. in Decorah, Iowa.
