The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team is picked to win its seventh Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship during the 2017-18 season based on a poll of the league's head coaches and athletic communications personnel.

The Warhawks, who are ranked 20th in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, finished second in the conference standings during last year's regular season with a 10-4 league mark. The team finished 22-6 overall after winning the program's first-ever WIAC Tournament championship and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years.

Senior guards Malia Smith (Bolingbrook, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Brooke Trewyn (Whitewater/Whitewater), who were first team All-WIAC honorees in 2016-17, return to lead UW-Whitewater. Trewyn led the league with 15.2 points per game and grabbed 7.0 rebounds per contest, and Smith finished first in the conference in steals (76) and second in free-throw percentage (.815).

Sophomore Becky Raeder (Sheboygan Falls, Wis./Sheboygan Falls) also returns as a starter in the backcourt. During her freshman campaign last season, she averaged 4.7 points per contest  and shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) from 3-point range.

Senior Andrea Meinert (West Bend/Kettle Moraine Lutheran), juniors Becky Deichl (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Olivia Freckmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Pius XI) lead the Warhawks up front. Meinert started the team's first 13 games and averaged 9.7 points and 6.2 rebounds in 2016-17 before suffering a season-ending injury. Deichl (5.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg) and Freckmann (5.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg) each played more than 20 minutes per game as the primary starters.

Head coach Keri Carollo returns for her 16th season at the helm of the program. She ranks fourth in WIAC history with 289 career wins and has led the program to three appearances in the Final Four.

UW-Whitewater begins the 2017-18 season Nov. 15 at Elmhurst. The conference season kicks off Jan. 3 against No. 11 UW-Oshkosh.
