A handful of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball alumni competed in the minor leagues and with other professional organizations during the 2017 season.
Former Warhawk Marty Herum (2012-13), a member of two NCAA Tournament teams and the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship team,
was named to the Arizona Diamondbacks' organizational all-star team after spending the season with High-A Visalia and Double-A Jackson.
Herum batted .302 with 37 doubles between the California League and the Southern League, including a .356 on-base percentage at Visalia and a .314 OBP with 14 extra-base hits at Jackson.
The third baseman won the California League Home Run Derby at the All-Star Break before his promotion to Jackson during the second half of the season.
Herum began his career in the Diamondbacks organization in 2013 in the Arizona Rookie League. He was promoted to the Midwest League (Single-A) in 2014 before being sent to Visalia prior to the 2016 campaign.
Lake Bachar (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), a standout pitcher from 2015-16 who helped lead UW-Whitewater to the 2015 WIAC championship and the 2016 NCAA World Series, has now pitched two seasons in the San Diego Padres organization. He finished the season with a 5-1 record, a 3.38 earned run average and 47 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings pitched, which covered 13 appearances (seven starts) in the Arizona Rookie League and the Midwest League (Single-A).
The highlight of Bachar's season came on Aug. 17,
when he tossed seven perfect innings, striking out seven and retiring all 21 South Bend hitters he faced as a member of Single-A Fort Wayne.
Other former UW-Whitewater pitchers playing professionally include right-handers Scott Plaza, Andrew Lowe and Rob Coe.
Plaza (2013-14), a member of the 2014 national championship team, pitched in the Pacific Association of Professional Baseball with the Sonoma Stompers for the second straight season. He posted a 5-2 record with a 4.51 ERA in 14 appearances, including 13 starts. Plaza struck out 68 hitters in 81 2/3 innings of work.
