The No. 20 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team posted wins in nine of 10 matches Thursday night to defeat UW-Oshkosh 45-6 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual match at Kachel Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) and freshman
Bowen Wileman (Milton, Wis./Milton) tallied pins for the Warhawks (7-4 overall, 2-1 WIAC), who established a season high in points for one dual match.
Vela, who is ranked third in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and eighth by D3wrestle.com at 149 pounds, delivered a pin in just 1:09 over the Titans' Mark Choinski, who is listed as a contender by D3wrestle.com. Vela improved to 15-4 with his team-leading ninth fall of the year.
At 197, Wileman also posted a first-period fall, pinning Chris Yaros of UW-Oshkosh (3-7, 0-3) in 2:46. It was Wileman's third pin of the season and seventh win overall.
Senior
Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) claimed his 15th consecutive victory, collecting his third technical fall of the season over the Titans' Patrick Reilly at 165. Gerszewski, who is ranked sixth in the nation by D3wrestle.com, improved to 22-5.
Freshman
Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) also registered a technical fall, defeating John DePersia at 184 pounds in the third period. Bonomo, a D3wrestle.com contender, is now 19-5 for the year.
Senior
Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) and sophomore
Connor Price (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) picked up major decisions at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively. Adcock (18-7) is ranked second by the NWCA and third by D3wrestle.com, while Price (19-8) is listed in the honorable mention section by D3wrestle.com.
Freshman
Brandon Arteaga (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) rounded out Warhawk performers with a 13-6 decision at 157. He improved to 12-8 for the season.
Juniors
Joseph Brodman (Tiffin, Ohio/Calvert) and
Zac Denny (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem), who each appear in the D3wrestle.com honorable mention section, won by forfeit at 133 and 125 pounds, respectively.
UW-Whitewater continues conference action next Thursday, Jan. 21, against third-ranked UW-La Crosse. Start time at Kachel Gymnasium is 7 p.m.
