The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team claimed six straight matches to jump out to a big lead Tuesday night in a 31-15 victory over UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual match at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
Sophomore Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East), ranked second in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and third by D3wrestle.com, provided the highlight of the night for the Warhawks (1-2 overall, 1-1 WIAC), pinning the Pioneers' Greg Osborn in just nine seconds at 149 pounds.
 
UW-Whitewater handed UW-Platteville (2-1, 0-1) its first dual loss of the season.
 
Seniors Corey Meyer (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) and Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) earned five points apiece with wins by technical fall at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively. Both Meyer and Gerszewski ended their matches in the third period.
 
Sophomores Garrett Whitehead (Milton, Wis./Milton) and Connor Price (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) picked up convincing victories by decision. At 157 pounds, Whitehead turned a 5-4 deficit entering the third period into a 10-7 win thanks to a pair of takedowns and riding time in the third. Price, who is ranked 10th in the nation by D3wrestle.com, overcame an early takedown against him in the first period, scoring nine of the match's last 11 points for a 9-4 triumph at 174.
 
Freshman Nicholas Bonomo (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) recorded an escape in the second overtime period at 184 and hung on for a 9-8 victory.
 
UW-Whitewater resumes action Dec. 9 at the Gator Duals in Nashville, Tenn. Competition is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Eastern Time.
