Junior shortstop
Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Co-Position Player of the Year to lead a group of 11 Warhawks recognized on the All-WIAC teams. First Team honorees include
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown),
Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington),
Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central),
Curtis Morgan (Green Lake/Green Lake),
Scott Plaza (Arlington Heights, IL/Prospect) and Pierce.
Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien), Conner Hurst,
Brock Liston (Darien, IL/Joliet Catholic) and
Casey Power (Ontario, Canada/Belle River) added Honorable Mention honors and
Kyle Haen (Madison/Edgewood) represented UW-Whitewater on the All-Sportsmanship Team. Head Coach
John Vodenlich was named the league's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, fifth in the last seven seasons and seventh time in his career at the helm for UW-W.
Pierce's Player of the Year honor is the third year in a row the award has been received by a Warhawk. He is the fourth UW-W baseball player to earn the position player honors since the league began naming a position player and pitcher each season in 1997 joining Pat Tobiasz (1998),
Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) (2012) and
Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) (2012 and 2013). Pierce leads the Warhawks in batting average, hits, runs batted in, runs scored, triples, home runs, slugging percentage, on base percentage and stolen bases. In the WIAC, he is second in on base percentage (.515), runs (54), hits (71) and stolen bases (14). His RBI (51), homeruns (9) and walks drawn (30) numbers rank third in the league and he is fourth in batting average (.438) and slugging percentage (.728). Pierce was named First Team All-WIAC last season.
Fon, a senior third baseman, has been named First Team All-WIAC for the third year in a row. He was named a Co-Position Player of the Year in 2012. This season, Fon ranks in the top ten in the league in runs scored (6th-42), batting average (7th-.388), doubles (7th-15), slugging percentage (8th-.619) and on base percentage (10th-.455). Fon was named Second Team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2012.
This is the third season being recognized on the All-WIAC squads for Friend. The senior outfielder earned First Team honors in 2012 and was named to the Honorable Mention Team in 2013. He ranks in the top ten in the conference standings in multiple categories including sacrifice flies (2nd-7), walks (2nd-33), runs scored (4th-47), hits (6th-60), homeruns (6th-8), on base percentage (7th-.478), slugging percentage (7th-.629) and batting average (10th-.377). Friend's 33 walks lead the Warhawks this season.
Mierow, UW-W's junior catcher, has stolen 13 bases this season, third best in the league and second most on the team this season. From behind the plate, he has tossed out 15 runners attempting to steal. Mierow is tied for fourth in the WIAC with six sacrifice bunts, the most for Whitewater this season.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Morgan and senior righty Plaza added First Team recognition. Plaza was a First Team honoree in 2013 and boasts the best earned run average, 2.92, for the Warhawk starters. He holds his opponents to a batting average of .253, fifth best in the league. Plaza has seen the most action on the mound for UW-W this season pitching 74 innings with 66 strikeouts and just 12 walks. Morgan has posted an ERA of 3.72 in 67.2 innings of work for Whitewater. He holds his opponents to a batting average of .260, the seventh best in the league this season.
Gonzalez, a senior outfielder and honorable mention pick, ranks third in the league standings in doubles (19), at bats (171) and number of times hit by pitch (14). He is fifth in the conference with 63 hits and tenth with a slugging percentage of .556 and 40 runs batted in.
First baseman Power, a junior, leads the team with 337 putouts. He has posted 45 runs batted in, fifth best in the WIAC, 15 doubles, tied for seventh in the league and three triples, also tied for seventh in the conference. Power has stepped in the batter's box 169 times this season, fourth most of all the players in the WIAC.
Senior righthanded hurler Liston earned Honorable Mention honors this season. His numbers in earned run average (3.31), opponent batting average (.271), strikeouts (47) and runs allowed (22) rank in the top ten of the WIAC statistics. Liston's seven wins on the mound ties for the most in the league.
Hurst, a junior lefty, has the third best ERA in the league this season, 3.08. He has allowed 25 runs with 18 of them earned, tied for the second fewest in the WIAC. Hurst has issued the fewest walks of any pitcher in the league this season, 10.
Haen, a junior outfielder and the team's representative on the All-Sportsmanship Team, is hitting .317 this season with 40 hits, five doubles, four triples, four homers, and 25 runs batted in. He has come around to score 37 times and has the third most steals on the team, 12.
