Warhawks Three-Peat, Fiorilli Earns All-Around Title

ITHACA, NY - The Warhawk women's gymnastics team won their third consecutive National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Division III National Championship in record-breaking fashion Friday night. Freshman Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) totaled 38.750 to become the 2014 national champion in the all-around, the first national champion in the event in UW-Whitewater history and seventh individual champion, earning All-America honors and breaking the UW-W record with her score.

UW-W totaled 193.025, a school record, to win the meet for the third year in a row. Along their journey to the title Friday the Warhawks set five program records, and have qualified 14 gymnasts for the individual event championships set for Saturday.

UW-Whitewater opened the team competition on the uneven bars. Cici Talcott (Kentwood, MI/East Kentwood) led the Warhawks with a school record 9.8 and teammates Allyse Dieringer (Germantown, WI/Germantown) (9.75), Katie Fiorilli (Solon, OH/Solon) (9.7), Courtney Pickett (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood) (9.7) and Amanda Quinn (Carol Stream, IL/Glenbard North) (9.25) combined to total 48.200 for the second best score in program history. Talcott, Dieringer, Pickett and Fiorilli qualified for the individual finals Saturday. 

In the next rotation, it was Dieringer who wrote her name atop the individual balance beam records with a score of 9.85. McKenzie Foster (Manitou Beach, MI/Addison) posted a 9.675 followed by Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville) (9.575), and Kristen Shackleton (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln Way Central) (9.525). Fiorilli and Steffi Heuer (Clarksville, TN/Middle College at APSU) each added 9.5 to the team's total. The five Warhawks notched the second best total in the event in school history, 48.125. Qualifying for Saturday's individual finals were Dieringer and Foster.

UW-W was spectacular on the floor exercise with the top four marks ever recorded by a Warhawk gymnast in the event. Dieringer and Fiorilli led the way with 9.825 scores. Talcott posted a 9.8 and Lee's performance scored 9.775 to rewrite the UW-Whitewater record book. The team total, 49.050, is the best by five-tenths in program history. Four of the six competing gymnasts for UW-W qualified for the individual finals on the floor including Pickett, Fiorilli, Dieringer and Talcott.

Leading by more than two points heading into the final rotation, UW-W didn't let down. Fiorilli posted a 9.725, tied for fourth in the school record book. Foster (9.55), Pickett (9.5), Lee (9.475) and Kaitlyn Weber (Kansas City, MO/Oak Park) (9.4) added to the team total in the event to finish with a 47.650 on the vault. Fiorilli, Foster, Pickett and Lee will all compete in the individual vault finals Saturday.

UW-W's 193.025 topped the competition by over two full points. Cortland State (NY) was second on the leaderboard with a total of 191.000 and Brockport State (NY) rounded out the top three with a score of 190.800. The rest of the team standings were: UW-La Crosse 188.550, UW-Oshkosh 188.475, Ursinus 186.750 and Ithaca 182.300.
