No. 1 Warhawks Open Home Slate With WIAC Win

WHITEWATER – The No. 1 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team won at eight of 10 weight classes Tuesday en route to a 38-9 victory over UW-Stevens Point in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference dual match at Kachel Gymnasium.
 
The Warhawks (6-0 overall, 2-0 WIAC) earned two pins, two technical falls and a major decision on their way to a 14th consecutive WIAC dual match win.
 
The Pointers dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-1 against conference competition with the loss.
 
Senior Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) and junior Tom Gerszewski (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) posted to lead UW-Whitewater. Edgren downed Luke Hoffmann in 2:41 at 285 pounds, while Gerszewski pinned Joe Crook in just 2:32 at 157.
 
Junior Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) and freshman Isaiah Vela (West Chicago, Ill./St. Charles East) earned five points apiece for the Warhawks with technical falls. Siefert, the top ranked wrestler in the nation at 197 pounds, ended the match early in the second period with an 18-3 margin. Vela recorded a 21-6 score in just under six minutes against Austin Worachek.
 
Senior Tyler Becker (Ingleside, Ill./Grant) totaled four points with a major decision victory at 165 pounds. He defeated Mitchell Lambrecht 13-4.
 
Other winners for UW-Whitewater included senior Ryan Aprahamian (Mukwonago/Mukwonago) and sophomore Zac Denny (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem). Aprahamian jumped out to a 6-0 advantage before emerging with a 7-2 triumph over Taylor Beaman, who is listed in the honorable mention section of the d3wrestle.com individual rankings, at 184 pounds. Denny registered a takedown in the first period and held on for a 6-4 win over Ben Vosters at 125.
 
Senior Trevor Pruett (West Bend/West Bend East) earned six points for the Warhawks on a forfeit by UW-Stevens Point at 133.
 
The Warhawks compete in their final home dual meet of the season Thursday at 7 p.m. against UW-Eau Claire.
