Wrestlers Win Opening Dual

The No. 1 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater wrestling team competed in its first dual match of the 2014-15 season Thursday and defeated UW-Platteville 38-3 in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Platteville, Wis.
 
The Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) registered two pins, two technical falls, one major decision and four decisions en route to the conference win.
 
The Pioneers (0-2, 0-2) tallied their lone points with a decision at 285 pounds in the dual's final match.
 
Juniors Tommy Gerszewski and Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) earned pins at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Gerszewski earned UW-Whitewater six points at the 4:13 mark of his match, while Siefert downed Joshua Cannon 4:35 into his contest.
 
Junior Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) recorded seven takedowns and a pair of near falls en route to a 20-5 victory by technical fall at 141 pounds. Sophomore Jordan Newman (Blaine, MN/St. John's Military Academy) totaled three near falls at 174 on his way to a 15-0 technical fall.
 
Sophomore Ronny Hauser (Hoffman Estates, IL/Fremd) posted nine points in the third period of his match at 133 pounds to defeat Zach Stenger 14-5 by major decision.
 
At 125 pounds, sophomore Zac Denny (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) took the lead for good on a reversal in the third period and hung on for a 5-4 triumph. Junior Corey Meyer (Cary, IL/Cary-Grove) broke a 3-3 tie with a takedown in the third period for a 5-3 win at 149 pounds.
 
Sophomore Willie Anaya (Downers Grove, IL/Downers Grove) scored at least one takedown in each period en route to a 12-5 victory by decision at 165. Two matches later at 184 pounds, sophomore Angel Botzoc (Marengo, IL/Marengo) recovered from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to earn a 5-3 triumph.
 
The Warhawks resume dual competition Saturday at the Olivet (Mich.) Comet Duals. UW-Whitewater opens against Trine (Ind) before taking on Alma (Mich.), Heidelberg (Ohio) and Olivet.
