UW-Whitewater's 2013 season came to an end Friday with a 3-2 ten inning loss to the College of Saint Scholastica at the Whitewater Regional of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament.

The Saints got on the board first.  In the bottom of the second three consecutive CSS batters singled for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, with two out, Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) walked and moved to third on a single to right by Sam Keller Jr. (Milwaukee/Riverside)  Pierce scored when a ball hit by David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) rolled under the second baseman's glove for a 1-1 tie.

Saint Scholastica used a single by Austin Colvard, his steal of second, and Kyle Jensen's single up the middle to take a 2-1 lead.

Whitewater knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth.  Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) singled and moved to second when Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) walked.  JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek)'s ball down the left field line brought in the tying run.

And that's where it stayed until the tenth.  The first batter of the inning, Jensen, was hit by a pitch.  Whitewater changed pitchers.  The second batter of the inning was hit by a pitch.  The next batter up grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third with one out.  Parker Olson hit a ball to shallow left that UW-W's JT Schneider (Oak Creek/Oak Creek) caught with a diving effort, and Schneider popped up to make a throw to the plate that wasn't in time to catch pinch runner Jesse Heaton's winning run.

UW-W starter Matt Roberts (Manitowoc/Roncalli) went nine innings, giving up seven hits and two walks, with six strikeouts.  Quintin Zander (Black Earth/Wisconsin Heights), 2-3, took the loss in relief.  Mickie Keuning went the first eight innings for CSS, yielding five hits and five walks, with two strikeouts.  Thomas Rogers, picked up his first decision of the season with two innings of two hit relief.  Jensen led CSS with a 2x4 day at the plate, while Keller and Bartlein had two hits apiece for Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater had defeated CSS during the regular season, winning 15-3 and 5-3 in a doubleheader in Whitewater May 1.

Whitewater finished the season with a 35-9 record, the sixth highest victory total in school history.  Saint Scholastica, 29-10 overall and 2-1 in the regional, will face UW-Stevens Point, 37-9 and 2-0, at 6:00 Friday night in the double elimination regional.

UW-W opened the regional with a 2-0 win over Case Western Reserve University Wednesday, then lost to UW-Stevens Point 7-6 in ten innings Thursday night.

This will be one of those games, that five years from now, at least a thousand people will swear they were there and saw everything.  Those exagerated claims aside, even the people that really were in the stands at James B. Miller Stadium at Prucha Field to see UW-Stevens Point defeat UW-Whitewater 7-6 in ten innings in the nightcap of the second day of the NCAA regional, probably missed something if they went to the concession stand or even looked for the potato chip they dropped.

Point took a 2-0 lead in the second.  Riley Spetz started the rally without swinging the bat.  Spetz was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then moved to third on a balk.  Bobby Gregorich doubled him in, and then he moved to second on another balk, then scored on a ground ball.

Whitewater went ahead in the third.  Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) and Mike Mierow (Brookfield/Central) led off with back-to-back singles, and both moved up on a ground out.  Michael Gonzalez (Delavan/Delavan-Darien) brought in the first run with a single to center, and Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) followed with a two run double to put the Warhawks up 3-2.

Jared Fon (Germantown/Germantown) opened the sixth with a double for UW-W, and scored on Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere)'s one out double to make it 4-2.  Mierow's second hit of the game plated Pierce for a 5-2 Whitewater lead.

With two out in the top of the eighth, Point's Dan Douglas was hit by a pitch, and then stole second.  Ryan Schilter singled him in to cut Whitewater's lead to 5-3.

It was improbable that UW-Whitewater even took a lead into the ninth inning. Despite seven hit batters, three walks, two balks and a wild pitch -- the most important number was 3, the number of Point runs that had crossed the plate.  Call it gutty, remarkable, unbelievable, but any description could not in ignore the fact that a "W" was within the Warhawks' grasp.

In the ninth, Jimmy Coady led off with a single for UW-SP, and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Casey Barnes' ball down the left field line one hopped the fence for a ground rule double to make it 5-4.  Barnes came home on a Warhawk error to send the game into extra innings, 5-5.

In the top of the tenth Sean Gerber walked, moved over to third on Coady's single and scored the go-ahead run on a ground out.   Coady, who had advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on the ground ball, scored when Spetz singled up the middle for a 7-5 Point lead.

In the bottom of the tenth, with one out, Whitewater's David Cladis (Joliet, IL/Joliet Catholic) was hit by a pitch.  With two outs pinch hitter Samuel Keller Jr. (Milwaukee/Riverside) tripled to right center bringing UW-W within one, 7-6 which is where one of the more improbable games in the Whitewater-Point rivalry, or maybe UW-Whitewater baseball, ended.

Wednesday, May 15
Tom Kerndt (Lansing, IA/Lansing) did it on the mound and Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) and Marty Herum (River Falls/River Falls) did it at the plate in a 2-0 win over Case Western Reserve Wednesday in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Regional in Whitewater at James B. Miller Stadium at Prucha Field.

Mikole Pierce (DePere/DePere) led off the seventh with a walk and two batters later Steve Bartlein (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) came through and doubled to centerfield to score Pierce and break the scoreless tie.

The first two batters reached in the top of the eighth for Case Western but Kerndt worked out of the jam with a pop-up, a strikeout, and a bases loaded strikeout to preserve the Warhawk lead.

Dylan Friend (Burlington/Burlington) crushed a one out single to right field to start the eighth, and after a strikeout, Herum doubled to left center to score Friend and give the Warhawks an insurance run and a 2-0 lead.  Herum was the only Warhawk to collect multiple hits with two.

Tom Kerndt (Lansing, IA/Lansing) pitched a gem for the Warhawks, throwing the complete game shutout and giving up just two hits while striking out five to up his season record to 8-1.

Jarret Gish, the Spartans' starter, pitched a solid game as well.  Gish, 7-1, threw eight full innings, struck out seven, and gave up six hits and two runs.

The Warhawks, 35-7, advance to play UW-Stevens Point Thursday at 6:00 pm.  The Pointers won their first game against Benedictine 6-5 in ten innings.  The Spartans, 27-13, will play St. Scholastica at 3 pm Thursday.  St. Scholastica, the six seed in the regional, upset St. Thomas, the one seed, 1-0 in the first game of the day.
