UW-W Gymnasts are National Champs, Again

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Championship in Kachel Gym in Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  UW-W has won back-to-back titles, sharing the crown (tiara) with New York-Brockport in 2012.  Warhawk Katie Thompson (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South) earned second place in the all-around competition, the same spot she earned in 2012.

Draw for Saturday's Individual Competition

The team standings were:  UW-Whitewater 189.75, UW-La Crosse 186.575, New York-Cortland 185.90, New York-Brockport 185.30, UW-Eau Claire 184.55, and Ursinus College 181.325.

UW-W has been on a steady progression toward the NCGA title.  The Warhawks placed third in 2010, second in 2011, tied for first in 2012, and now alone at the top.

Thompson's second place is the highest ever for a Warhawk gymnast, equaling her finish last year.  She had a high of 9.60 on the floor.  In the vault she scored 9.55, 9.525 on the uneven bars, 9.55 on the vault, and 9.275 on the balance beam.

Thompson has been an all-around All-American each of her four years.  She finished seventh in 2010, sixth in 2011, and second in 2012.  UW-W has had gymnasts earn All-America status in the all-around competition seventeen times since 1988.

UW-W set a team record with a 48.00 on the vault.  That group consisted of CiCi Talcott (9.6), Siri Wischmann (Delano, MN/Delano) (9.60), Delina Phillips (Capac, MI/) (9.625), Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville) (9.625) and Thompson (9.55).

The top ten finishers in the all-around competition earn NCGA All-America honors.  Sarah Nadrowski of Cortland won the all-around title with 38.10 points

In addition to team competition and the individual all-around, Friday's results determined who would advance to Saturday's individual event competition.  The top fourteen finishers, and ties, will compete for titles in the individual specialties; floor exercise, vault, balance beam and uneven bars.  Friday's scores do not carry over to Saturday's competition.  The top twelve gymnasts in each event Saturday will earn NCGA All-America honors.

The UW-W gymnasts who will be competing Saturday include Delina Phillips (Capac, MI/), Hannah Lee (Clarksville, TN/Clarksville), Cici Talcott (Kentwood, MI/East Kentwood), and Siri Wischmann (Delano, MN/Delano) in the vault.  Anne Mix, Allyse Dieringer (Germantown, WI/Germantown), Katie Thompson (Kingsport, TN/Sullivan South) and Talcott qualified for the uneven bars final.  Mary Kate Young (Lawrenceville, GA/Cullins Hill) and Wischmann will be on the beam.  Young, Thompson, Wischmann and Dieringer advanced to Saturday in the floor exercise.
