Sake Bottle Stays in Kenosha

The sake bottle will move to Kenosha for the next year.  UW-Parkside, ranked fourteenth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division II poll, defeated UW-Whitewater, fourth in the NWCA Division III poll, 22-15 in Kenosha, Wisconsin Wednesday night.

The schools' annual dual meet features a Sake Bottle Trophy, a tradition started by former UW-W coach Willie Myers and Parkside's Jim Koch as a reminder of an international wrestling competition the two shared.  Whitewater had the trophy as a result of a 17-16 win in Whitewater in 2012.

The loss snapped Whitewater's six match win streak.  The Warhawks are 12-3 in dual meets.

The meet began with the 174 pound weight class.  Parkside's Josh Anthony and Whitewater's Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) were tied 2-2 after the first period, and Anthony led 5-4 after two, but Anthony scored six points in the third for an 11-4 win to give UW-P a 3-0 lead in the team scoring.

Matt Gille's 12-1 win over Whitewater's Justin Birschbach (Fond du Lac/Fond du Lac) at 184 upped the Rangers' lead to 7-0.  Gille led 2-0 after one period and increased that to 7-0 after two.  Birschbach's point came on an escape in the third.

Just like the two bouts before it, the 197 pound match began with a low scoring, evenly matched first period.  Whitewater's Shane Siefert (Mundelein, IL/Carmel) and Parkside's Davion Willis ended the first three minutes 0-0.  Willis broke into the scoring column with an escape from the down position to start the second period, and added a takedown with one second left in the second for a 3-0 lead.  Siefert got on the board with a penalty point in the third to make it 4-1, but Willis earned riding time to close out the scoring and increase the Parkside lead to 10-0.

UW-P's James Malachek made it 13-0 Parkside with a 4-2 decision over Anthony Edgren (New Lisbon/New Lisbon) at 285 pounds.  Malechek made a 2-0 first period lead stand up, adding an escape and riding time to counter Edgren's takedown in the third period.

Whitewater's first points came on a forfeit at 125 pounds, with Joe Meylor (Darlington/Darlington) picking up the six points.  Parkside led 13-6.

Grant Sutter (Dodgeville/Dodgeville) added three points for Whitewater with a 8-6 decision over Joseph Her at 133 pounds.  Her scored first, but Sutter held a 3-2 lead after one period.  Sutter added an escape from the down position in the second to make it 4-2, then a takedown in the third before Her's reversal to end the scoring as UW-W narrowed the gap to 13-9.  Sutter upped his record to 16-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first period UW-W's Matt Adcock (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park) took a 1-0 lead with an escape from the down position to start period two.  Parkside's Arik Yde evened the match with an escape to start the third, and closed it out with a takedown and riding time for the 4-1 win.  Parkside led Whitewater 16-9.

Dan Argueta of Parkside pinned Garrett Whitehead in 3:59 at 149 pounds.  Argueta held a 2-0 lead after the first period, with the pin coming just before the halfway point in period two.  Argueta's pin upped the Rangers' lead to 22-9.

Whitewater's Cade Sarbacker (Mineral Point/) and UW-P's Dillon Bera hooked up in wrestling's version of a pitcher's duel at 157 pounds.  Sarbacker posted a first period takedown that held up throughout the match.  Sarbacker improved to 7-0 this season, and he narrowed Parkside's lead to 22-12.

The last match of the night began like every other match of the night, with little (or no) scoring.  Warhawk Tyler Becker (Fox Lake Grant, IL/) and Parkside's Nick Fishback were scoreless after one, and Becker's escape from the down position was the only scoring in the second period.  Fishback tied it when he escaped from the bottom to start the third period, but Becker pulled off the 3-1 win with a takedown with 0:14 left.  Becker moved his mark for the season to 11-8.

UW-W is 12-3 in dual meets this season.  That record includes a 5-0 mark in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  Whitewater's next competition will be the WIAC championship February 17 at UW-Eau Claire, where the Warhawks, defending conference champions, will be the number one seed.
