Warhawks Fall in NCAA Second Round

Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The best season in UW-Whitewater women's soccer history came to an end with a loss to Capital University 1-0 at the UW-Milwaukee soccer complex in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Sunday night. Thunderstorms and heavy rain throughout the morning and afternoon Sunday left standing water on Fiskum Field. Deemed unplayable, the Warhawks were forced move their scheduled home game to Milwaukee to play on turf.

The wind was gusting even harder than the previous night of games with gusts reaching 45 miles per hour. The majority of the first half, the teams tried to get a read on the opponents offensive and defensive strategies. With less than three minutes left in the first half, Capital made good on a scoring opportunity after Maura Fortina set up Mariah Richards in the box for the first, and only goal of the game with the scoreboard reading 42:36.

The Warhawks had more scoring opportunities with the advantage in shots, 16-8, and corner kicks 13-3 but Capital thwarted the Warhawk strikers seven times.

UW-W wraps up the best season in school history 17-1-4 after winning their fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, grabbing their second WIAC Championship in a row and making their third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship.

Whitewater's team made their mark in the UW-W record book this season. The Warhawks broke the school record for most wins in a season with 17 and gave up the second fewest goals in a season in program history outscoring their opponents 47-17. UW-W posted 38 assists in 2013, fifth best in the Whitewater record book and tied for the seventh most goals scored with 47.

Capital will advance in the tournament with an 18-4-1 record.
