Lee Brekke (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) and
Jake Hohlstein (Portage/Portage) have been named captains of the Warhawk football team for the 2012 season.
Brekke, a senior quarterback from Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, will be in his third season at UW-Whitewater. He played in five games last season, completing .560 of his passes for 128 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. In 2010 he directed the Warhawks to five straight playoff wins, including the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl for the NCAA III national title. He played in nine games in 2010, completed .584 of his passes for 843 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Hohlstein, a senior defensive lineman from Portage, Wisconsin, is a three year letterwinner. He was credited with nine solo tackles and ten assists, with 3.5 tackles for a loss and one sack in a 2011 campaign that included Second Team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.
UW-W will be seeking to extend several streaks in 2012. The Warhawks have won a record seven consecutive WIAC titles, have qualified for the NCAA III playoffs seven years in a row, and have advanced to national title game, the Stagg Bowl, all seven years. The Warhawks have won three straight national titles, and four in the last five years. UW-W comes into 2012 with a 45 game win streak, the longest active streak in college football -- at any level. That string is also the fifth longest in NCAA history, also at any level.
Whitewater will open the 2012 season August 31 at Washington University in Saint Louis. The home opener is set for September 15 against Buffalo State College at 1:00 in Perkins Stadium. Call 262-472-2222 for ticket information.
