#12 Warhawks Top #19 Titans

UW-Whitewater, ranked twelfth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, defeated number nineteen UW-Oshkosh 22-16 Friday night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Jose Quintana raised his record to 18-5 with a win at 149 to get Oshkosh off to a 3-0 start.  Kulchytskyy, now 26-1 and ranked fifth in the NWCA III ratings, gave Oshkosh a 9-0 lead with his pin at 157.  Whitewater got on the board with Cedric Gibson (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield)'s decision at 165, cutting the Titan lead in half, 6-3.  Dan Schiferl got those points back for UW-O, plus one, with a major decision at 174, topping Reid Dickerson (Indianapolis, IN/North Central) 12-4 for a 13-3 Oshkosh lead.  Whitewater's David Dwyer (Rockton, IL/Hononegah) upped his record to 17-5 with an upset at 184, beating Sam Engelland 7-5 in overtime.  Dwyer took a 2-0 lead, and shortly after Engelland had to take a short injury timeout.  Engelland, a three-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference runnerup and current WIAC Wrestler of the Week, entered the match 19-0 and ranked eighth in the NWCA III poll at 184.  Oshkosh led 13-6 going into the break. 

Whitewater's Adam Latella (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), a 2011 WIAC champion and NCAA III All-American earned a major decision, 12-4, over Ryan Heath at 197 to cut the Titan lead to 13-10.  Corey Anderson (Rockton, IL/Hononegah), ranked third at 285, upped his record to 23-2 with an identical 12-4 win over Jason LaPlante, LaPlante's first loss of the season after an 8-0 start.  Anderson's win gave Whitewater its first lead of the match, 14-13.  Zach Mueller, ranked third at 125 pounds, matched up with Warhawk freshman Mike Schloegel (Joliet, IL/Lincoln-Way Community), coming off a 5-0 weekend at the Budd Whitehill Duals.  Mueller defeated Schloegel 8-3 to slow Whitewater's momentum and put Oshkosh back in front 16-14.  At 133 pounds Whitewater's Grant Sutter (Dodgeville/Dodgeville), in his first match of the year, defeated Carl DeLuca of Oshkosh, 13-5 to give Whitewater the slim lead again, 18-16. 

And that set up the final match of the evening as the decisive match.  UW-W coach Tim Fader moved Jake Fredricksen (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock), ranked sixth at 133 pounds with a 19-2 mark, up to 141 to face Alex Mueller, owner of a 21-4 mark coming in.  Fredricksen led 2-0 at the end of the first period, 5-0 after two, and won 8-0 including a point for riding time to seal Whitewater's 22-16 win.

UW-Whitewater is 15-6 in dual meets, UW-Oshkosh is 4-2.

UW-Whitewater will host the Border Brawl Saturday, January 21 beginning at 12:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
Participating schools include the twelfth-ranked Warhawks, #19 UW-Oshkosh, #25 UW-Stevens Point, UW-Eau Claire, #8 Olivet, #13 Elmhurst College , Trine University, Simpson College, Lakeland College, and Harper Community College (IL).  A total of 18 ranked individuals will be competing.  For complete rankings, visit Brute-Adidas National Wrestling Coaches Association team and individual rankings.  In addition to the team dual meet competition, each team will bring additional wrestlers for weight class bracketed mini-tournaments that will carry on at the same time as the team duals.  There will be six mats of wrestling in Kachel Gym.  The day's action will go as follows:
