Men's Hoops Opens with Win

Box Score UW-Whitewater limited Concordia University (IL) to 27% shooting from the floor to open the 2011-2012 season with a 56-37 win in River Forest, Illinois Friday.

Concordia tied the game 2-2, and that was the last time Whitewater did not lead in the game.  With Whitewater ahead 10-9 at 14:44 the Warhawks took off on a 12-0 run to lead 22-9.  The biggest lead of the half was 30-14 when sophomore guard Cody Odegaard (Poynette/Poynette) hit a layup with 1:01 left in the first half.  Issa Avery hit a three with one second left to pull Concordia to within 30-17 at halftime.

The Cougars shot 26% from the floor in the first twenty minutes and 2-8 from beyond the arc.  Whitewater shot 48%, but 0-9 from three point range.

UW-W had a double digit lead the entire second half, with the largest bulge 53-29 with 5:04 remaining.  Concordia closed out the game with an 8-3 advantage for the final score.

The Warhawks out-rebounded Concordia 41-24, including 30 defensive boards.  Junior Luke Knoble (Boscobel/Boscobel) put together a double-double for UW-W, with 11 points and a game high ten rebounds.  Senior center Chris Davis (Madison/East) led both teams with 16 points, also contributing eight rebounds.  Freshman guard Quardell Young (Kenosha/Bradford) had four steals for UW-W.  Concordia was led by Avery and Charles Gordon, both with nine points.  Avery added eight boards to lead the Cougars in that category.

UW-W will play Dominican University in River Forest Saturday at 4:00.
