Women's Soccer Celebrates "Sweet Sixteen"

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater edged Wartburg College, winning in a shootout Saturday to advance to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA III women's soccer championship. UW-W, 14-4-3, and Wartburg, 17-2-3, tied 1-1 through two periods and two overtime periods. With the game officially declared a tie, the teams used a shootout, which Whitewater won 6-5, to determine which team would advance in the tournament. Wartburg was the regional host and UW-Whitewater's Friday night 2-0 win over Aurora University and the Saturday match against Wartburg were played in Waverly, Iowa.

UW-W got off the first shot in the game just :38 into the contest by Stacey Schultz (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls) and Wartburg's Monica Noti made the save. Wartburg's first shot on goal came at 6:15 off the foot of Chelsea Frye and Whitewater's Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) made the save. Whitewater's Becky Plese (Sussex/Arrowhead) had a shot at 13:55 that Noti stopped, and Laren Nashleanas (Brookfield/East) followed at 15:32 with a shot that was blocked by a defender. Nashleanas had another opportunity to break the scoreless game but her shot at 22:17 hit the crossbar. Myers kept Wartburg off the scoreboard with a save of Katy Wendt's shot at 25:56. The first half ended with no score.

Wartburg went up 1-0 on Anna Aquino's goal at 51:33, her tenth of the season. Wendt tried to add to the score with a shot at 64:11 and Aquino at 72:18, but Myers kept them out of the net. The equalizer came on Pamela Lisowe (New Holstein/New Holstein)'s goal at 73:41, her third of the season, assisted by Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere/De Pere). Plese had her second shot on goal at 78:27 but Noti made the save. Wendt tested Myers again at 82:06, and Rachel Torry also did at 88:53, but Myers made the saves to send the game into overtime.

Wartburg accounted for all three shots that occurred in the first overtime. Wendt tried Myers twice and Kaylee Benning got off a shot with just :36 left in the overtime period, but Myers stopped all three.

Wartburg's Frye had the only shot on goal in the second overtime, and Myers also made that save to send the game into a shootout.

UW-W coach Greg Henschel was asked how UW-W would prepare for the sectional.  "One day at a time, celebrate the win and take it all in for now. I feel for Wartburg, it's hard to lose this way", he said.

UW-Whitewater, champion of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, is making its first appearance in the NCAA III tournament.
