Because of their performance in the Warrior Open this past weekend,
Jessa Luebke (Tomah/Tomah) and
Brooke Bell (Milwaukee/Alexander Hamilton) have been named UW-Whitewater's Track and Field athletes of the week.
Luebke received athlete of the week for her hammer throw. It was the best collegiate hammer throw of 49.67m (162'-11'') at the Winona State Warrior Open. Her winning mark is a provisional qualifier, but it is not the best of her 2010 Track and field season. In addition, Luebke also threw two event seasonal bests in the shot put and discus. Her mark in the shot of 12.77m (41'-10.75”) placed 8 (3rd DIII athlete). Her discus throw of 35.53m (116'-7”) advanced her to finals but she did not score points in the event.
Bell earned her honors by running successively faster races in the trails and finals of the 100m dash. Both races were NCAA DIII provisional qualifiers with times of 12.23 and 12.15 seconds in the finals. Brooke placed 7 in the highly competitive final where 3 athletes broke 12 seconds. Bell also ran a seasonal personal best in the 200 of over 1.6 seconds. That was her second race at the half-lap this season and was 12 hundredths of a second off the provisional mark.
The Warhawks will compete in the WIAC Championships in UW-River Falls May 7 and 8. The following meet will be held on May 15 at the University of Chicago. The times for both are TBA.
