Twenty-Six Earn Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete Award

Twenty-six UW-Whitewater student-athletes earned The Chancellor Scholar-Athlete award for the 2009-2010 season. This award is given to those who are seniors nominated by their coaches. The student-athlete must have participated in sports for three years with a minimum GPA of 3.25 at the end of the fall semester having at least 90 degree credits. Chancellor Richard Telfer will give each student-athlete a commemorative watch as a gift. The student-athletes that earned the award were:

Kelly Beese (Wausau/West), Basketball, is majoring in education with minors in coaching and special education and has a cumulative GPA of 3.747. She has been on the dean's list for four years at UW-Whitewater as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Kelly was a member of the 2008 Final Four team as well as a member of the 2008 and 2010 WIAC championship teams. She participated in Adopt-a-Highway, Warhawk Buddies, Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, Campus Clean-up and has been a summer camp coach. Kelly is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society.

 

Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe), Basketball, has a cumulative GPA of 3.531 and is majoring in health, human performance and recreation with a minor in coaching. She has been on the dean's list for four years as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Kelsey was a member of the 2008 Final Four team as well as a member of the 2008 and 2010 WIAC championship teams. She was a three-time All-WIAC player as well as All-WIAC Defense in 2009 and 2010. Kelsey was named third team for the All-Central Region and team captain for 2009-10 season. She participated in Adopt-a-Highway, Warhawk Buddies, Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, Campus Clean-up and has been a summer camp coach.  

 

Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran), Basketball, has a cumulative GPA of 3.721 with majors in accounting and finance. She is in the top 15% of her class, has been on the dean's list for four years as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Heidi was named to CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All District Team in 2010. She was the recipient of the Marilyn Stark-Benson Memorial Scholarship for Accounting in 2009. Heidi was a member of the 2008 Final Four team as well as a member of the 2008 and 2010 WIAC championship teams. She participated in Adopt-a-Highway, Warhawk Buddies, Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, Campus Clean-up and was a SAAC member for four years. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and an honorary member of Wisconsin Certified Public Accountants.

 

Whitney Kueltzo (Homer Glen, IL/Lockport Township), Bowling, has a cumulative GPA of 3.505 and is majoring in special education. She is the team captain this year and a member of the Fright Night All-Tournament team.  She has been on the dean's list for five semesters. She has participated in Make a Difference Day, and Reading with the Warhawks. Whitney is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda and SAAC.

 

Danielle Anton (Marshall/Marshall), Cross Country/Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.623 and is majoring in chemistry. She has been on the dean's list for five semesters and has earned the Chemistry Academic Achievement Award in 2010. She has had the opportunity to work on AAAS/Merck Undergraduate Science Research Program and had two internships during the summer of 2009 with CaP Biomaterials and University Health Center Laboratory. Danielle is the UW-W record holder for the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon, WIAC indoor pentathlon champion in 2010 and has placed third in the 400 hurdles at the 2009 WIAC outdoor championship. Danielle has volunteered at UW-W track and field camps as well as various charities and campus sponsored 5K run/walks.

 

Jaclyn Nett (Hilbert/Hilbert), Cross Country/Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.74 majoring in human resource management. She has been on the dean's list for four years as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and the USTFCCCA Division III Cross Country All-Academic team. She also received the UW-W Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award all four years. She was voted Co-Most Valuable Freshman for Cross Country and was a team captain for track. Jaclyn is a member of SHRM, SAAC, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and Golden Key. She has participated in the student-athlete mentor program, Make a Difference Day and Reading with the Warhawks.

 

Andrea Newman (Bruce/Bruce), Cross Country/Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.66 and is majoring in accounting. She has been a WIAC Scholar Athlete for three years and been on the dean's list for six semesters. Andrea has received the UW-W Student-Athlete Achievement Award for three years. She was the Most Improved Freshman in 2006 and received the Marty van Steenderen Sportswoman of the Year for Cross Country in 2008. She was the Track team captain in 2009. Andrea is a member of Beta Alpha Psi and WICPA. She has participated in Make a Difference Day and has volunteered time at a local nursing home.

 

Jennifer Taylor (Whitewater/Whitewater), Cross Country/Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.496 and is majoring in art with a minor in advertising. She has been on the dean's list for three years and a WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for four years. She received the USTFCCCA Division III Cross Country All-Academic Team Award twice. Jennifer has been team captain for cross country in 2008-09. She has had her artwork displayed in Oaxaca Art Exchange, Paper Politics, a juried art show and published in Details student juried magazine while attending UW-Whitewater. She is a two-time category winner in the all-campus photo contest. Jennifer is a member of SAAC, and AIGA. She has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, One World Running Shoe Drive, Campus Food Drive, Kids Night Out, Make a Difference Day and been a counselor and youth director for Walworth County 4-H.

Max Wasikowski (Cudahy/Cudahy), Football, with a cumulative GPA of 3.634, is majoring in physical education with a minor in mathematics. He has been on the dean's list and received the R.W. Prucha Memorial Scholarship for three years. He has been a member of the four-time WIAC championship team as well as the NCAA Division III championship teams in 2007 and 2009. Max was on the 2009 WIAC All-Sportsmanship team and received the Forrest Perkins Award in 2009. He is a member of the UW-W Society of Physics Students.

 

Paul Wick (Franklin/Franklin), Football, is majoring in finance and marketing and has a cumulative GPA of 3.50. He has been on the dean's list four times, on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and received the Financial Executives International Scholarship and the 2009 Madsen Family Scholarship. Paul has been a member of the football team that won four WIAC championships and two NCAA Division III national championships. He was a team captain in 2009. In 2009 he earned All-WIAC second team and in 2008 was an honorable mention pick. Paul has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Make a Difference Day, Franklin Youth Football Camp and helped with tornado clean-up in Kenosha. He is a member of the SAAC, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is a FMA National Honor Society member.

 

Chelsea Davis (Greendale/Greendale), Golf, is majoring international business with a minor in Spanish and has a cumulative GPA of 3.31.  She has been on the dean's list for three semesters. Chelsea was All-WIAC First Team in 2008 and 2009, WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team in 2007 and was the UW-Whitewater Invite medalist in 2009. She has three career collegiate individual victories. Chelsea has volunteered over 60 hours of community service including twice for Relay for Life. She is a member of the IBA.

 

Allison Annala (Oswego/Oswego), Gymnastics, has a cumulative graduate GPA of 4.0 in the master's program of health/human performance and recreation. She earned NCGA Scholastic All-American honors in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010; was on the dean's list for seven semesters and on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for three years. In 2007 Allison was the most improved team member. She was a member of the gymnastics team that placed fourth at nationals in 2007, second in conference in 2008 and won the WIAC title in 2010. Allison has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, Stick it for the Cause Breast Cancer Awareness Run/Walk, and has been a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and SAAC.

 

Traci Jo Korte (New Boston, MI/Huron), Gymnastics, is majoring in elementary education with a minor in coaching and has a cumulative GPA of 3.366. She has been on the dean's list for three semesters and WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for three years.  Traci Jo was a member of the team that qualified for NCGA championships in 2007-2010 and won the WIAC championship in 2010. She has participated in UW-Whitewater gymnastics clinics, Make a Difference Day, UW-Whitewater Breast Cancer Awareness Run/Walk, volunteered at nursing homes and coached at gymnastics camps in Michigan. She is a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda.

Stephanie DesJardins (Park Ridge, IL/Main South), Soccer, is majoring in physical education, with certifications in health, adapted PE and coaching and has a cumulative GPA of 3.632. She has been on the dean's list at UW-Whitewater and was on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll four times. Stephanie was a team captain in 2009 and a four-year starter in soccer. She has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, Kids Night Out, youth soccer clinics and volunteered time at nursing homes. She has been a member of SAAC for four years.

Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards), Softball, has a cumulative GPA of 3.652 and is majoring in accounting and finance. She has been on the dean's list for six semesters, been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for three years, NFCA Scholar Athlete for two years, on the second team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District in 2009 and received the UW-W Academic Achievement Award for 3 years. Amanda was named first team All-WIAC in 2008 and 2009, NFCA Great Lakes Region first team in 2008, NCAA III Regional All-Tournament team in 2008, and the NCAA World Series All-Tournament team in 2008. She was the starting shortstop for the WIAC championship team in 2008 and '09 as well as the NCAA III national runner-up team in 2008. She holds the UW-Whitewater season record for home runs with 13. Amanda has participated in Make a Difference Day, Reading with the Warhawks, helped with softball clinics and tutored for Project Assist. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and Golden Key International Honor Society.

 

Michelle Daciolas (Roselle, IL/Lake Park), Tennis, is majoring in business management with a minor in public relations and has a cumulative GPA of 3.52. She has been on the dean's list, the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, received the UW-W Academic Achievement Award and was an ITA Scholar Athlete for three years. Michelle is team captain this year, has been WIAC Athlete of the Week multiple times, Rookie of the Year for the 2006-07 season, Most Improved Player in 2008-09 and is a member of the 100 Win Club. She has participated in Women in Sports Day, and is a member of SAAC, UW-W SPRSSA and has been a UW-W marketing intern.

 

Kelly Rutkowski (Waunakee/Waunakee), Tennis, has a cumulative GPA of 3.63 and is majoring in English with a minor in journalism. She has been on the dean's list and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for four years and has received the UW-W Academic Achievement award. She is part of the tennis team that has won the WIAC conference title three times and in 2009 won the WIAC title at #3 doubles. Kelly has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, taught Sunday school, and volunteered at the Whitewater Middle School as an English tutor. She is a member of SAAC, SWEA, and America Reads.

 

Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine, IL/Palatine), Tennis, is majoring in health and human performance with a minor in health promotion with a cumulative GPA of 3.987. She has been on the dean's list and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for three years, received the UW-W Academic Achievement Award for three years and was aCoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and academic all-region in 2009. Ingrid was Rookie of the Year in 2007-08, team captain 2009-10, and has been WIAC Player of the Week multiple times. She was named the WIAC Scholar Athlete in 2009. She has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, Kids Day Out, Women in Sports Day, and has been an intern at the Fort Atkinson hospital. Ingrid is a member of SAAC, UW-W Optimist Club, Golden Key, UW-W Buddhist Club, Sigma Alpha Lambda and CHARPE.  

 

Danny Glinert (Madison/Edgewood), Tennis, has a cumulative GPA of 3.56 and his major is accounting. He has been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, the dean's list and is an ITA Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Danny was Rookie of the Year in 2007-08 and team captain 2009-10. He has been ranked in #1 for the ITA Central Region in doubles and had a doubles national ranking of 18. Danny has helped with Tennis All-Stars in 2007, coached Special Olympics tennis in 2008 and volunteered at the Whitewater middle school tennis program. He is a member of SAAC, Golden Key and USPTR.

 

Kyle Halweg (Waunakee/Waunakee), Tennis, has a cumulative GPA of 3.847 and has a dual major of operations management and economics with a minor in Spanish. He has been on the dean's list and an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and received the UW-W Academic Achievement Award. Kyle has also received two research grants in the last two years. He has received Most Dedicated and Most Improved Player awards and is a team captain this year. Kyle has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, Make a Difference Day, volunteered for With Wings and a Halo, the 5K Breast Cancer Walk/Run, worked at football/basketball concessions for different organizations and facilitated the SlakStrong fundraising campaign. He has served as vice-president and president of SAAC and is a member of APICS, and UW-W Economics Society.  

 

Ian Hintz (Burlington/Burlington), Tennis, is majoring in accounting and has a cumulative GPA of 3.9. He was an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2005-06 and 2007-08, has been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and received the UW-W Academic Achievement Award. He has spent time volunteering at the Salvation Army.

 

Joseph Schneider (Wausau/Wausau West), Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.453 with a major in business education and a minor in coaching. He has been on the dean's list for five semesters, and been on the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for three years. He placed in WIAC indoor championships in 2008 and 2010, and outdoors in 2009. Joseph is a member of Pi Omega Pi and Sigma Alpha Lambda.

 

Annie Berkley (Racine/Washington Park), Volleyball, is majoring in physical education with a minor in health and adaptive licensure and has a cumulative GPA of 3.25. She has been on the dean's list and the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. She was Most Improved Player in 2009 and on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Anne has participated in Make a Difference Day, Kids Night Out, Reading with the Warhawks, and helped organize the Hope for Grace volleyball tournament. She is currently president of CHARPE and has been a member for four years.

 

Alyse Karls (Dane/Lodi), Volleyball, is majoring in English education with a minor in ESL and has a cumulative GPA of 3.85. She has been on the dean's list for the past seven semesters, a WIAC Scholar-Athlete for four years, and on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team in 2009. Alyse was team captain in 2008 and 2009, a WIAC Player of the Week in 2009, WIAC Honorable Mention in 2009 and received the Marty van Steenderen Sportswoman of the Year for volleyball in 2009. She has participated in Reading with the Warhawks and volunteered time with City of Whitewater Park and Recreation department, and tutoring. She is member of SAAC as well as Phi Kapppa Phi and Sigma Alpha Lambda honor societies.


Kelly Sorensen (Madison/Memorial), Volleyball, is majoring in physical education and has a cumulative GPA of 3.95. She has been on the dean's list, as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for four years, and District 5 Third Team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District. She was team captain in 2008, All-WIAC honorable mention in 2008, member of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Final Eight All-Tournament Team in 2007 and UW-W's Most Improved Player in 2006. Kelly has participated in Reading with the Warhawks, City of Whitewater Park and Recreation volleyball clinics, Warhawk Food Drive, and as a coordinator of the Hope for Grace volleyball tournament.  She is a member of WAHPERD.


Megan Starrett (Lancaster/Lancaster), Volleyball/Track and Field, has a cumulative GPA of 3.868 and is majoring in communicative sciences and disorders. She has been on the dean's list as well as the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll for four years. She has been accepted into the communicative sciences and disorders graduate program. Megan was a 2009 and 2010 indoor track and field conference qualifier as well as a 2009 outdoor track and field conference qualifier. She is on the UW-W women's track and field top ten performance list for shot put, javelin and discus. Megan has participated in Make a Difference Day for four years, and Reading with the Warhawks for three years. She has also volunteered for the Lancaster Jaycees community projects. She is a member of NSSLHA.
