Three Champions for Women's Track & Field

The women's track and field team ran, threw, jumped, and vaulted their way to a fifth place finish out of nine teams in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Saturday February 27 hosted by UW-Platteville.  The Eagles of UW-La Crosse won the meet, scoring 166.5 points.  The Warhawks finished the day with 78 points.

Team scores were UW-La Crosse 166.5, UW-Eau Claire 119.5, UW-Oshkosh 118, UW-River Falls 84, UW-Whitewater 78, UW-Stevens Point 76, UW-Platteville 45, UW-Stout 15 and UW-Superior 0. 

The Warhawks were led by three individuals who captured conference titles.  Brooke Bell (Milwaukee/Alexander Hamilton) sprinted to a first place finish in the 55 meter dash in 7.14, a NCAA III provisional qualifying time.  Bell previously earned an automatic berth with a time of 7.10.  Sara Poppe (Germantown/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led the field in long jump with a leap of 18-3.25 (5.57m), a season best and provisional qualifier.  Poppe also finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 37-7.25 (11.46m), also a provisional qualifier.  Danielle Anton (Marshall/Marshall) won the indoor pentathlon with a total score of 3120 points, a provisional qualifying score.  Aside from leading the overall competition, Anton won the 800 meter run portion of the pentathlon.

Other top finishers for the Warhawks included Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker) in the high jump with a second place jump of 5-3.75 (1.62m).  Demos also earned a spot on the podium in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.65, good for fifth place.  JoLyn Owen (Middleton/Middleton) also chipped in with a third place finish in the pentathlon.

Madeline Roznos (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) earned the Warhawks points with her fourth place finish in the 5000 meter run, finishing with a time of 18:11.64, destroying her previous season best by 40 seconds.  Jessa Luebke (Tomah/Tomah) contributed with a fifth place finish, provisional qualifier and seasonal best of 52-11.50 (16.14m) in the weight throw, and a sixth place finish of 41-07.25 (12.68m) in the shot put.

Hayley Tenpas (Hortonville/Hortonville) is UW-Whitewater's representative on the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

The Warhawks will have one more chance to qualify for the NCAA III Championship Friday, March 5 at the Karl Schlender Last Chance Meet hosted by UW-Whitewater.  Field events start at 5:00 p.m. and running events start at 5:30 p.m.
