Gibson's Title Leads UW-W at Penn Open

Freshman heavyweight Nick Gibson (Milton/Milton) won his weight class at the William Penn Open in Oskaloosa, Iowa Saturday.  There were no team scores in the meet.

Gibson , the number three seed in the tourney, defeated Karl Spain of William Penn 6-4 in the first round.  He then topped sixth-seeded Paul Parsley of Waldorf Community College with a 1:31 second round fall, and followed that with a pin in 6:07 over number seven Bobby Proffitt of William Penn.  Gibson continued to run through the William Penn lineup, defeated Ryan Groom of WP 6-4 in the championship match.  Gibson raised his record to 11-6, with four wins coming by fall.

UW-W's Andrew Pettit (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) earned a second place finish at 174 pounds, going 2-1.  He won his first two matches by pin, then lost to Nate Stirgus (unattached) 11-5 in the title match.  Pettit evened his season mark to 9-9.

Dayton Yu (Madison/East) went 1-2 at 133 and Brian Lewis (Verona/Verona) 1-2 at 141 to wrap up the Warhawk contingent.

UW-W will compete in the Ursinus Homecoming Invitational in Collegeville, Pennsylvania Saturday, January 16.  The next home meet for the Warhawks will be January 21 with UW-Parkside visiting Williams Center for a 7:00 start.
