University of Wisconsin-Whitewater head football coach
Lance Leipold has been named Division III Coach of the Year by the
American Football Coaches Association. One day earlier, Leipold was announced as the
Fieldturf NCAA III Football Coach of the Year.
Leipold also captured the
D3football.com Coach of the Year, announced December 19.
The AFCA honor is determined by a vote of Division III coaches. The Fieldturf award is decided by company representatives and presented by Howie Long. Both were presented at the recently completed AFCA convention in Orlando.
Leipold directed UW-W to an undefeated season, the first 15-0 record in school history. The Warhawks won their fifth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and advanced through the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III playoffs to the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, the Division III championship, all five years.
In his three seasons at the helm in Whitewater Leipold guided UW-W to Division III championships in 2007 and 2009, including a 38-28 win over Mount Union College December 19. During that span the Warhawks have compiled a 42-3 record, including 20-1 in the WIAC.
Leipold was also named national Division III Coach of the Year by all three organizations, D3football.com, the AFCA and Fieldturf, in 2007.
Seven members of the 2009 team earned All-America honors under Leipold, with senior quarterback
Jeff Donovan (Wauwatosa/East) also nabbing WIAC Player of the Year recognition. A total of twenty Warhawks were named All-WIAC, ten of those first team picks.
