Thompson is returning to defend her national championship in the discus. She qualified with a throw of 152-1. The top qualifier this year is Tanesha Hughes of Monmouth College (IL) with a mark of 164-5. Kristen Kuehl is the Division III recordholder at 180-6, and Thompson won last year with a toss of 161-8, which is also the UW-W record. Thompson will be making her third appearance in the NCAA meet, having also qualified in the discus in 2007.
Bell, a sophomore, has already piled up a list of accomplishments. She won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 55 and 200 indoors in 2008, then added the 200 title outdoors. She followed that up with the 100 and 200 championships outdoors this year. She has qualified for a national meet three times, beginning with the 55 meters indoors last year. She went on to earn All-America honors with a seventh place finish in the 200 in last year's outdoor season. Her 200 time of 23.98 in the WIAC outdoor meet set the UW-Whitewater and conference record, and is the seventh fastest 200 meter time in the history of Division III women's track.
The NCAA III recordholder in the 100 is Muffy Israel of Carthage College, 11.71 in 2002. Callen Martin of Wilmington College won the event last year in 11.85, and Jodyann Raymond of the City College of New York has the top qualifying time of 11.84. The UW-W 100 record of 11.82 was set by Camille Ross in 1999.
Bell has the fastest qualifying time in the 200. Rachel Anderson of Illinois Wesleyan University won the NCAA outdoor 200 in 2008 with a 24.76. The D3 record of 23.72 was set by Rhondale Jones of Lincoln University in 1999.
UW-Whitewater tied for twenty-third in the team standings in 2008. The Warhawks' best finish ever was fourth place in 2006, sandwiched by a sixth in 1999 and eleventh in 2001.
