Smith Jumps Over Record

UW-Whitewater freshman Marcus Smith (Milwaukee/West Allis Central) won the triple jump at a last chance meet hosted by UW-La Crosse May 14 --- breaking the school record and posting a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III automatic qualifying mark in the process.  Smith jumped 49-4.5 (15.05m) to break the school mark of 48-7.25 set by Rob Thompson in 1999.

Freshman sprinter Isiah Gray (Milwaukee/Brown Deer) ran a 48.18 to win the 400 meters in the same meet, improving his NCAA III provisional qualifying time. 

Smith and Gray are joined by several teammates looking forward to the NCAA III championship at Marietta College in Ohio March 21-23.  Shaun Davis (Edgerton/Edgerton) is an automatic qualifier in the discus.  Matt Kovnesky (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) in the 800, Ben Stringer (Assumption, IL/Central A&M) in the discus, and Davis and Ryan Howell (New Glarus/New Glarus) have all met provisional standards.
