UW-Whitewater swimmers broke five school records and reached the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III "B" qualifying standard three times in the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wisconsin Thursday.

UW-W's top finish in the first day of the three day meet was accomplished by the 400 medley relay consisting of Jess Wells (Monroe/Monroe), Kristen Jahn (Wonderlake, IL/McHenry), Courtney Jenkins (Gurnee, IL/Gunee), and Megan Kohnke (Milwaukee/Riverside), which touched second in 3:58.65. That is the school record and a "B" qualifying time. Megan Kohnke (Milwaukee/Riverside) had the Warhawks' top individual finish, placing third in the 500 freestyle in 5:08.47, also a school record and "B" qualifier. Kohnke added another school record with a 24.88 lead off leg of the 200 freestyle relay.
Other top performances for the Warhawks included Courtney Jenkins (Gurnee, IL/Gunee), sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:11.75, but she topped that with a school record and "B" time of 2:10.49 in the preliminaries. Also the 200 freestyle relay broke the school record, placing fifth, with a time of 1:41.42, and Jayne Benson (Ingleside, Ill./Grant Community) placed ninth on the three meter board with a team season best total of 256.35 points. Randi Osgood (Muskego/Muskego) finished twelfth in the 50 freestyle in 25.16, and the leadoff of the 200 relay team broke the school record in the 50 with a 24.88 split. Jess Wells (Monroe/Monroe), leading off the medley relay in the prelims, broke the school record in the 100 backstroke with a 1:01.59, and then lowered it to 1:01.45 in the finals.
UW-W is in fourth place in the team standings. The WIAC championship continues Friday and concludes Saturday.
