Warhawks Finish 4th; Machmueller 6th at WIAC Championship

The UW-Whitewater men's cross country team finished fourth of nine teams at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship on the campus of UW-Whitewater.  The Warhawks' top finisher was Dan Machmueller who finished sixth overall and ran the eight kilometer course in 25:56.  In 2008 the Warhawks finished fifth at the championship and Machmueller finished ninth.

UW-W had ten runners finish the race.  Warhawk finishers were Machmueller, Mathias Werve (26:17), Aron Kehoe (26:18), Jarrod Schwichtenberg (26:29), Joe Dixon (26:41), Jon Fink (26:50), Jordan Truttschel (27:23), Brakken Kraker (27:55), Tyler Stein (28:02), and Ben Knapp (28:09).

The winner of the race was Zach Wilhelmy from UW-La Crosse.  Wilhelmy finished in 25:29 and beat his nearest competitor by six seconds.  Rounding out the top five were: Jason Garvens of UW-Platteville (25:35), Joel Heroux of UW-Stevens Point (25:47), Paul Moran of UW-La Crosse (25:51) and Connor Lonning of UW-La Crosse (25:54).  Lonning is the only top five finisher to repeat in the top five, as he finished fourth at the 2008 championship.

UW-La Crosse won the title with a score of 26.  The Eagles have won five out of the last six conference titles.  The rest of the team scores were: UW-Platteville (64), UW-Stevens Point (64), UW-Whitewater (97), UW-Eau Claire (135), UW-River Falls (192), UW-Oshkosh (196), UW-Stout (208), and UW-Superior (241).

The top seven runners received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eighth through 14th earned All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15th through 20th claimed honorable mention recognition.

The WIAC championship concludes regular season competition for the men's team.
