Linksters Finish Second at WIAC Championship; Davis Fifth

The UW-Whitewater women's golf team finished second at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship Sunday at Northern Bay Golf Resort and Marina in Arkdale, Wisconsin after firing a three day total of 1005.  The tournament, consisting of three 18-hole rounds, was won by UW-Eau Claire with a total of 963 strokes.  The Blugolds have won four of the last six conference championships.

UW-W was led by Chelsea Davis (Greendale/Greendale) who finished fifth after carding a three day total of 245.  Davis shot rounds of 78, 86, and 81.  Katie Maurer of UW-Eau Claire won the individual championship with a tournament score of 227 and rounds of 77, 77, and 73.  Maurer won the tournament in 2008 and is only the second person to ever repeat as WIAC individual champion.

This is the first time in championship history that 54 holes were used to determine a champion.  Last year the tournament was scheduled to have 54 holes but was shortened to 45 due to inclement weather.  The champion earns an automatic bid into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III tournament in May at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.  This is the first time this season the Warhawks have competed on three consecutive days.

Gianna Tenuta (Kenosha/Bradford) made a strong showing for the 'Hawks finishing tied for sixth after rounds of 84, 82, 83.  The Warhawks' Amy Peters (Seymour/), who was playing as an individual, also finished in the top 10, in 9th place, with rounds of 82, 83, and 85.

Other UW-W golfers were Emily Kuiper (Racine/Case) (90-89-78=257), Melanie Helgeson (St. Charles, IL/North) (85-86-87=258), Melissa Ellis (Kenosha/Tremper) (88-92-85=265), Lindsay Porter (Verona/Madison Memorial) (88-93-90=271), Alexa Campanile (Mount Prospect, IL/Prospect) (90-94-91=275), and Carol Anne Maveety (Janesville/Parker) (98-93-93=284).

Lindsay Porter (Verona/Madison Memorial) was also named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship team for her display of exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  Kuiper's 78 on the final day of the tournament was her best round of the year and ties her for the fourth best 18-hole round by a UW-W golfer this season.

The final team results were: UW-Eau Claire (316-330-317=963), UW-Whitewater (335-343-327=1005), UW-Stevens Point (358-345-336=1039), UW-Stout (344-358-357=1059), UW-Platteville (361-372-344=1077), UW-Oshkosh (379-383-366=1128), and UW-River Falls (374-387-374=1135).

The top five individuals were Katie Maurer of UW-EC (77-77-73=227), Jessica Urban of UW-Stevens Point (79-82-72=233), Catherine Wagner of UW-EC (75-84-82=241), Sara Mattes of UW-EC (83-82-76=241), and Chelsea Davis (Greendale/Greendale) of UW-Whitewater.

The championship tournament concludes competition for the Warhawk women's golf team this fall.  UW-W won four tournaments this season and finished second in two, including the WIAC tournament.  Six golfers finished the season with averages in the 80's.  Leading the way was Davis (81.7), followed by Tenuta (85.5), Kuiper (86.1), Helgeson (87.1), Peters (87.4), and Ellis (88.1).
